If the 3rd world …
If the 3rd world defaulted on its debt, the entire system would collapse and millions of people would die. That’s a fault in the way the system was set up, but it is an unfortunate reality and saying that the story is simply money vs 7,000 babies dying is a little… well… dishonest.

I think the point …
I think the point of that story was to highlight the fact that a moral concept of debt can override even things that anyone would consider morally absolute. He’s not saying ‘Debt killed these babies, therefore debt is evil’, rather he’s questioning what debt means as a moral concept.

Actually, Graeber …
Actually, Graeber is all for having a Jubilee. He certainly doesn’t consider debt to be a valid moral concept. To paraphrase him, “morals are like debt, except they’re not like debt at all, and it’s ridiculous to even try to make a comparison.”

I never said he wasn’t. In fact, I would say you’re just reiterating what I said. He’s questioning the very concept of debt as morality. My response was to a specific story he told within that theme, and what he might have meant by that specific story. I made no mention of his thoughts on a jubilee (and, by the way, I also think they’re a good idea), my whole post was about that one story, and how it highlights the horrors of debt ‘as a moral concept’.
