A 24-hour general strike is underway in Portugal over public sector pay cuts and tax rises, two days before parliament votes on a severe new budget. The strike is set to cause the biggest disruption in the country for over two decades. Meanwhile, unrest is building in the UK over the government’s proposals to increase university tuition fees.

And it’s a mindset that is causing many people to lose their homes – that don’t necessarily have to.
